About 150

The Air Cadet program offers young individuals aged 12 to 18 an amazing opportunity for personal growth, leadership development, and adventure.

From flying and gliding experiences to leadership training and community service initiatives, the program empowers youth to reach new heights and become confident and responsible leaders of tomorrow.

The aims of the cadet program are,

1. Develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership

2. Promote physical fitness

3. Stimulate the interest of youth in the sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces

The program receives joint funding and support from both the Department of National Defence and the civilian Air Cadet League of Canada, working together to deliver high-quality youth programming.

It is important to note that Cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces and are not required or obligated to join the Canadian Armed Forces after leaving the program.

Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) Officers are dedicated community members who volunteer their time to work with youth, delivering a dynamic and structured programme.

CIC officers are Canadian Armed Forces members within the Cadet Organizations Administration and Training Service (COATS), a Reserve Force sub-component responsible for the safety, supervision, administration, and training of Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers.

CIC officers serve in sea, land, or air elements and receive specialised training as youth leaders. Many are former cadets giving back to their community, whilst others are former Regular or Primary Reserve Force members, parents, or community members.

CIC Officers typically work one evening weekly and one weekend monthly, plus additional planning time. Some spend summers instructing at cadet training centres or accompanying cadets on competitions, expeditions, or exchanges. They teach various skills, provide coaching and mentorship, and serve as role models for youth.

Squadron Sponsoring Committee

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) plays a vital role in running the squadron. The SSC comprises parent and community volunteers who manage fundraising, annual budgets, and other activities that ensure a successful training year.

Squadron History

In 1970, Lieutenant Colonel D.E. Irish and the Parent’s Sponsoring Committee chose a name rooted in Hamilton’s history.

The name came from a WWII Air Force unit at Mount Hope. 19 Squadron became 119 City of Hamilton Tiger Squadron—named after the Hamilton Tigers football team—now serving as 424 Search and Rescue Squadron at CFB Trenton. With the name approved, a number was still needed.

The number came from wartime Air Training units in Hamilton schools: 62 Westdale, 81 Central Technical, 150 Cathedral Boys, 195 Central Collegiate, and 330 Delta High School. The sponsors chose 150, creating “150 Hamilton Tiger”. The Air Cadet League approved it, and the squadron was officially stood up on 18 February 1970.
